Yeah, she seems gentle, but lads, she bites. Horses can bite for a number of reasons, including boredom, hunger, grooming, or frustration, but in Dream Journey's case, she does it to establish dominance.
The real jockey, Kenichi Ikezoe, somehow totally missed this, by just letting the horse bite him on the neck until he bled. Somehow, and I mean no insult to that brave fool, noted for his ability to handle temperamental horses, he decided that since Dream Journey got much calmer after biting necks, everything was okay.
But of course, it was NOT okay. The horse does not know how strong it is. This same dude said other horses like Orfevre were just messing with him because they didn't do more than buck him off or kick. IF the behavior is not corrected, and that would be the trainer's responsibility, as well as the rider, they'll just keep doing it.
Dream Journey used to corner staff and try to bite them, too. For a horse, biting around the nape of the neck is a pure dominance display. If you run away, or of all things, just LET it bite you, it learns that this is acceptable, and that it is in charge, hence why it won't usually do that more than once.
Predictably, on the track, DJ was fairly well-behaved, but also, not really listening to his rider. He was just along for the ride, are recurring problem with Stay Gold's offspring, minus Fenomeno.
As an Uma, Dream Journey is likely portrayed as being calm for the same reason the horse was. As long as he thought he was in charge, he was cool. True to form, DJ is rather authoritative. Even her sisters defer to her somewhat, just like they defer to Stay Gold, another tiny pony with a really bad temperament.
You'd be amazed how often that happens in the world of horses. Again, horses don't know their own strength, so even something as small as a man can easily tame one, so long as you establish dominance first. I wouldn't recommend getting fuggin' bit as a solution though. It hurts a lot, and is sneaky. Give me a kicker like Golshi instead. "Lift that leg against me even once, you little shit, and you're falling over" Not my preferred method, but some horses need a stronger touch. For DJ fans, grabbing a horse around the poll (The crest of the head right behind its ears) and forcing the face down with one hand by putting pressure on the nose is the emergency method. It will make the horse lose balance and feel some pain. Not ideal, but if you're getting bit, it's better than the stitches you'll need.
